RIJKS ROOD RIJKS MIDDEN GRIJS consists of two handmade cylinders, one open, the other closed, one meter high and idem in diameter. The restrained forms harken back to the minimalist sculptures of the beginning of his career. The colors come from the palette used in the restoration of the Rijksmuseum and are a modest homage to that museum.
Elusiveness and perfection are the two constants in Peer Veneman’s oeuvre. He is known for his unconventional use of materials. He makes no choice between figuration and abstraction, nor between geometric and organic forms. Some sculptures have a distinctly abstract character, while others possess a form derived from nature or even combine both elements within one work. As he himself says, “I always want to arrive at an image that you recognize and yet have not seen before.”
