Freerk Wilbers – Root Gallery

Freerk Wilbers creates kinetic artworks and light installations from experimental research into materials, movement and mechanics. His work share a sense of unpredictability, that follows automatically from the interactions between the laws of physics that operate on all parts.

The work examines a simple rule (split a circle into three smaller circles) to generate a composition. Following this rule, it grows downward from the ceiling, like an upside-down tree. The cable lengths are assigned by an algorithm to create a carefully random composition. Gravity, and slight imperfections and misalignments, cause every circle to delicately balance at a different angle. Together, this evokes the un-designed nature of a natural phenomenon.
