A few years ago I took a boat through a mangrove forest in Malaysia. I found that a fascinating experience. I found the way these plants clung to the mud with great strength very inspiring. I then immediately started several works on paper with this root theme. Back home, I continued working on them and also saw opportunities to translate these forms into sculpture. The work I am showing at KunstRAI is the first in a series of sculptures that all have their basis in this mangrove world. The title of this sculpture is ROOTS. The importance of mangrove forests in the world is very great. They protect the coast and for an important habitat for birds and fish.
